About the Consulate

The Consulate of Jamaica in New South Wales is currently the only Jamaican consular office in Australia. While based in Sydney, the office provides consular guidance and assistance to Jamaican nationals and the diaspora community across all Australian states and territories.

Dr Stephanie Fletcher-Lartey's connection to Jamaica's diaspora in Australia began in 2009, when she arrived in Sydney as an international student pursuing her PhD at the University of Technology Sydney. What started as a small community gathering grew, in 2012 — coinciding with Jamaica's 50th Anniversary of Independence — into the Jamaican Association of Australia, a nationwide membership organisation which she founded and led for over 14 years as its President. She also served as the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council's Representative for Asia and the Pacific from 2023 to 2025 (extended to February 2026 following Hurricane Melissa). Dr Fletcher-Lartey is a public health epidemiologist by profession and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Sydney. This sustained diaspora leadership built much of the community foundation she now draws on as Honorary Consul for Jamaica (13 July 2026), the sole Jamaican consular appointment in Australia.

A Message from the Honorary Consul

On behalf of the Consulate of Jamaica in New South Wales, it is my privilege to welcome you to this page. I take up this role mindful of those who have carried it before me, and of the trust placed in this office by our community and the Government of Jamaica. As a public health epidemiologist by profession and a member of the Jamaican diaspora, I bring both a professional discipline for getting things right and a personal commitment to the community I now formally represent. This office exists to support Jamaicans and the diaspora across Australia, and to nurture the 50-year friendship between our two nations. — Dr Stephanie Fletcher-Lartey

Consular Services

Travel Documents

Passport Applications & Renewals

Machine-readable passports can be applied for online directly through Jamaica's Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), which processes and issues all Jamaican passports.

Jamaicans living overseas may also access passport services through the nearest Overseas Mission. Missions collect applications and forward them to PICA headquarters in Kingston; the Embassy of Jamaica in Tokyo provides passport assistance to nationals in Australia, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines and South Korea. This Consulate assists with that process locally — checking documentation and helping applications on their way to Tokyo and Kingston.

Visa Enquiries

Australian citizens do not require a visa to visit Jamaica for short stays. For other visa categories, or non-Jamaican nationals travelling to Jamaica, the Consulate provides guidance and directs formal applications to the appropriate Jamaican mission.

Coming Soon

Notarial Services & Document Legalisation

The Consulate will offer notarial and document legalisation services — such as certified copies and affidavits — once the Honorary Consul's Writ of Appointment, currently in transit from Kingston, is received. Please contact the Consulate for guidance on urgent notarial needs in the interim.

Civil Matters

Civil Registration Guidance

Support and guidance for Jamaicans in NSW navigating civil registration matters — births, marriages, and related documentation — through Jamaica's Registrar General's Department.

Urgent

Emergency & Welfare Assistance

In cases of emergency involving a Jamaican national in New South Wales — hospitalisation, detention, bereavement, or loss of documents — the Consulate is a first point of contact and liaises with the Embassy in Tokyo as needed. Persons contacting the Consulate from overseas can reach the office via WhatsApp on the number below.

Trade & Investment

Trade, Investment & Industry Links

The Consulate connects Australian and Jamaican businesses with the key bodies driving Jamaica's economy — trade and investment promotion through JAMPRO, tourism through the JHTA, music rights and licensing through JACAP and JAMMS, and mining through the Jamaica Bauxite Institute.

Community

Diaspora & Community Engagement

Beyond consular services, the office supports connections between the Jamaican diaspora, the Jamaican Association of Australia, and the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council — helping the community stay engaged with developments at home.

This office cannot provide legal advice or guarantee outcomes with Jamaican authorities. Contact the Consulate directly to confirm which services can currently be provided.
