Official Consular Call: Visit to Government House Sydney
On Friday, 30 October 2026, I had the honour of undertaking an official consular visit to the Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, and her vice-regal consort, Mr Dennis Wilson.
Setting out early to beat the peak morning traffic, I arrived at the historic estate over an hour ahead of my 9:00 AM audience. A Police Special Constable warmly welcomed me at the gates and directed me to park outside until the grounds were officially opened for morning operations. I used the interlude to take a quiet stroll through the adjacent Royal Botanic Garden, capturing a few photographs of the harbour views and lush landscapes — a restorative oasis right on the perimeter of the bustling Sydney CBD.
Promptly at 8:30 AM, the Special Constable invited me into the grounds. I was met outside the residence by Her Excellency's Protocol Officer, signed the official visitor book, and received a brief walkthrough of vice-regal protocol before the audience commenced.
The time spent with the Governor and Mr Wilson was engaging, warm, and jovial. Our discussion traversed several topics, beginning with my background and public health work, transitioning to my appointment as Honorary Consul, and highlighting the vibrant Jamaican community in Australia. As with any meeting between a Jamaican and an Australian host, the dialogue was enlivened by genuine camaraderie and a few classic Jamaican jokes.
A charming highlight of the morning emerged before the talks even got underway: my outfit happened to match the vice-regal reception room décor with absolute precision, providing an amusing icebreaker and plenty of laughter among the staff and hosts.
The visit concluded with a meaningful literary exchange. I had the privilege of presenting Her Excellency with a signed copy of my latest book, leaving a piece of Jamaican-inspired literature in the Government House library. In return, the Governor generously presented me with an inscribed volume documenting the history and heritage of Government House.
My sincere thanks go to Her Excellency and Mr Wilson for their hospitality, grace, and meaningful dialogue in strengthening ties between Jamaica and New South Wales.
